EDUCATION OF CHILDREN WITH BEHAVIOURAL DISORDERS I

04.756

SUMMARY

This course will focus on teaching children who chronologically and markedly respond to their environments in socially inacceptable or personally unsatisfying ways. The focus of this course will be on the identification and teaching of children with behavioural disordered. Specific means by which teachers may assist children with behavioural disorders will be examined and discussed.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Get ready to do a lot of reading a lot of chapter quizzes. The majority of the coursework focused on online testing. This is one way of keeping accountability, but perhaps not the most effective method of applying and retaining the information in the textbooks. Two case studies were examined and reflected upon, which assisted in making the readings more applicable to my personal professional situation.

REFLECTION

As I reflect back upon this course, I have visions of multiple-choice tests. Fortunately for me, the content covered in this course was of great interest to me. I found the information in the textbooks fascinating and through-provoking. This is when I first discovered mindfulness. Although mindfulness was not part of the course, as I examined one of the case studies, I found that the calming effects of mindfulness were potentially beneficial to the child in the case study as well as to my own students.

ARTIFACTS

Given that the writing requirements of this course were minimal, there is very little to include as artefacts. I have included the two case studies I prepared to fulfill the requirements of the course. One case study is on emotional and behavioural disorders, the other on anxiety. Both case studies were important in helping me understand the complexity of behavioural disorders and how different disorders present and manifest in very different ways.
