INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES
(ICT) FOR TEACHERS

07.755

SUMMARY

This course will examine the impact of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) on teaching and curriculum implementation practices. Educators who want to effectively infuse ICT into their teaching practice must have first-hand experience using online applications. The course involves hands-on exploration to support critical analysis of the impact, limitations and possibilities of ICT and social media.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Prepare to learn about digital citizenship and how to use many different apps and websites in a fun and interactive manner. Deciding how to infuse technology into all aspects of education will become easier using the TPACK model. Your definition of digital citizenship will likely expand after learning about how essential components of devises are mined by hand in poverty-ridden communities.

REFLECTION

This was by far the most interactive and fun course of the Masters program. This was the first time I actually spoke with other students and shared assignments in real time. It was during this course that I realize how learning is truly a social endeavor. I found the readings and assignments incredibly relevant to today’s learners and educators. My eyes were opened to the impact and influence, both negative and positive, that technology has on the education system. I would highly recommend this course to any educator in any stream of the Masters program as the content is applicable to special education teachers, administrators, and those in guidance and counseling.

ARTIFACTS

For this portfolio, I chose to include a PowerPoint presentation on how to use iPads to support struggling readers. Although I have read several articles on the engaging benefits of using technology, I was still quite reluctant to hand my struggling readers an iPad. Through this course I discovered how to strategically structure lessons with the complementary use of appropriate apps.

The summary of learning assignment was a creative activity. I had never used an online poster-making site like this. By having to extend my skills outside my comfort zone, I was forced to learn something new and I actually had fun while summarizing my learning!

Although not a true meme, as Dr. Mike Nantais will concede, the meme assignment was one that provided time for reflection and creativity. I chose a quote from a required reading that spoke to me about the enduring power of relationships, even in the age of technology.
